Ecology
Trees are arguably the most mysterious and fascinating species in our ecosystem. Reaching toward the light to turn sunbeams into sugar, they create the foundation for life on earth. In the modern age, in cities like Portland, we share space with trees and other species in radically new ways. Additionally, globalization has allowed plant species to move around the globe at an unnatural pace, leading to myriad ecological results that often take us by surprise.
It is no secret that native ecosystems are in crisis. The most radical and effective thing we can do to slow and reverse this trend is to plant native species in our home gardens. Below is a list of ecology-related resources that I find important, informative and/or inspiring.
Emeral Ash Borer - As of September 2025 the invasive beetle Emerald Ash Borer has been confirmed in Portland. Simply put, this is catastrophic news for the city’s roughly 95,000 Ash trees. This link summarized the situation and links out to the City’s current management plan. If you are the current steward of an Ash tree, please take the time to review this info on EAB and call us if you need help managing your trees in accordance with the plan.
Native Trees List - The single best thing you can do to help support and maintain biodiversity and ecosystem function is to plant native trees. Here is a list of trees native to our area that you can plant for a better future. Quick caveat: not all of these species will be a good choice for your specific situation, and our native Ash (Fraxinus latifolia) should not be planted at all given then Emerald Ash Borer situation. Get in touch if you want some guidance deciding which native tree to plant in your yard. We love helping our neighbors to restore native habitat!
Nuisance Tree List - On the flip, these species should never be planted here. They are invasive, and outcompete native species. In most cases I would recommend removing these species’ from your landscape and replanting with more ecologically productive species. Call us if you need help whacking some English Holly or Laurel.
